Job Function:
The incumbent performs the duties of a Communication Engineer specializing in the Design, Installation, Commissioning, Operation & Maintenance of communications systems and equipment required during the construction and operation and maintenance of the Project. Exercises strong judgment and initiative in implementation of major work assignments. Reviews work of consultants and other engineers.
Principal Activities, Duties, and Responsibilities
The incumbent provides leadership in the completion of activities related to the Communication aspects of the hydroelectric generation and transmission systems of the Project. Major areas of involvement are in the design, implementation and commissioning of communications systems and equipment required for the construction and operation of two large scale hydroelectric generating plants, HVdc converter stations, high voltage ac and dc overhead lines, switcyards and submarine cables. Typical assignments will be related to fibre optic transport systems, digital microwave, VHF radio, etc. This includes the following activities:
- Ensures work incorporates the Corporation's Safety and Health Program and Environmental Management Programs.
- Prepares technical specifications on many aspects of the communication system design and equipment, evaluates bids and recommends award.
- Reviews manufacturers' drawings and technical data to verify conformity with design criteria and Client standards, codes, practices and operating philosophy.
- Provides technical input for large-scale projects, spanning multiple years and multiple disciplines.
- Explores, analyzes, and introduces new design concepts, solutions, and innovative methods for achieving the Corporation's strategic objectives, relying on basic theory, first principles, and original ideas.
- Directs consultants in the completion of specific assignments. Reviews and approves reports from consultants.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from a recognized university with a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Electrical);
- Eligible for membership in PEGNL.
- Suggested minimum of 1-5 years of progressively responsible experience working with an electrical utility with particular focus on design, implementation and commissioning of communications systems and equipment.

- This position requires application of concepts, principles and broad guidelines to help meet the corporation's strategic objectives.
- The incumbent must possess excellent analytical and technical skills combined with sound judgment and an ability to function in an unstructured environment.
- Familiarity required with codes and standards applicable with the discipline, particularly ASTM, IEEE, NEC, ANSI, IEC and CSA.
- This position requires a proven ability to accept responsibility in a highly technical environment.
